Summertime is road trip time, and what a great opportunity to have fun with the Spanish your kids have been learning! Here are 10 games & activities you can do while on the road. Pick and choose what fits your kids’ ages and what they have learned:
- Play I Spy in Spanish.
- Play with the Alphabet. You can spell Spanish words aloud with the Spanish letters, go in a circle with each person having to say the next Spanish letter and a Spanish word that starts with it, play Hangman, or see who can say the alphabet the fastest by timing it.
- Have a Spanish Spelling Bee. One person is in charge, the others are the players. Be sure to use words your kids have learned. The person in charge says a Spanish word to the first player. That player has to spell it correctly using Spanish letters. You can play two ways. The first way, players get points for each word spelled correctly until you run out of words, and whoever has the most points wins. OR, players are out if they spell a word incorrectly, and the last player left wins.
- Play One Hint One Guess. Someone thinks of a Spanish vocabulary word, writes it down and shows everyone except one person in the car. Then each person gives a one word hint to help the person guess it. Try giving the hints in Spanish too! For example, let’s say the word is “el sol” (the sun), a Spanish hint could be “amarillo” (yellow), or “círculo” (circle), or “calor” (hot).
- Tell a Story Together. Go in a circle with the first person saying a sentence to start the story. Next person adds a sentence, and so on. Use the words “primero” (first), “luego” (next), “entonces” (then), and “por fin” (finally) to sequence events. The sillier the story gets, usually the more fun it is!
- Play the Envelope Card Game Game to practice verbs. Players try to win by getting the most cards.
- Play Silly Run On Sentence. One person starts the sentence with a subject, like “La chica”. The next person adds a bit, like “come el taco”. The next person adds more, like “y la hamburguesa. The next person adds another part, like “en el parque”. And so on. Keep it going round and round and let it get long and silly. For added fun have someone write the sentence as you go along, and then someone else try to say it all from memory!
- Sing along with Spanish for You! songs. Check those out here. You can print the lyrics!
- Use any of my FREE Mini-Lessons. Just print before you go, and plop the audio files on one of your devices, and you’re ready to go!
- Scramble Words on Paper. Someone writes a Spanish word on paper with the letters scrambled, and the others try to guess it. The one who guesses first gets to do the next.
