I am reposting this because it is a great item to make at the beginning of a school year to use all year long or make in the summer to review things with your kids at home.
Memory is a great game for learning and practicing many things in Spanish – vocabulary, verb meanings and conjugations, asking and answering questions, even grammar concepts.All you need is: 2 posters, plain white envelopes (I used 3-5/8″ x 6-1/2″ – just your regular small size), tape, scissors, and a marker. Cut your envelopes in half so they become like “pockets” to hold things. Then number 2 groups 1-20. Tape the “pockets” to the posters like in the picture. And there you have it. Easy!
If you are practicing vocabulary, then on one side place pictures of the words into the pockets so they cannot be seen. Mine can be seen just so you get the idea of what I mean. (You can use all 20 pockets or fewer. I often find with groups 12 pockets is enough.)
Then on the other poster, place the Spanish words in the pockets not in the same order as the pictures. When it is a student’s turn, have them ask for a pocket from each poster by saying the number in Spanish (or English).
Other ways I have used the game is to place questions in Spanish in the pockets of one poster and the answers in Spanish in the pockets of the other poster. Students have to find the answer to a question.
I have also used it to practice verb conjugations. On one poster I place the English verb meanings in the pockets, and on the other the Spanish. For example, let’s say we are learning the verbs – mirar = to look at, escribir = to write, and leer = to read. And I want to focus on the students learning certain forms, like the “I, we, and they” forms. On one poster I will have cards with “I look at”, “We look at”, “They look at”, “I write”, “We write”, “They write”, “I read”, “We read”, “They read” – and then their Spanish counterparts in the pockets of the other poster.
I have also used it for grammar concepts. For example, let’s say your students are learning about the locations of things – like above, below, next to, near, behind, in front of – I would put those phrases in Spanish in the pockets of one poster, and then in the other poster, I would insert pictures that show each concept.
