Draw Towns To Practice Spanish In So Many Ways

When I was a child I loved to draw pictures of towns on large pieces of paper. I would tape them together and make huge towns where I could then use my brothers’ Hot Wheels cars and drive them around. The most fun was making the town! I went through a lot of paper and markers!

You can do something like this with your students or your kids at home to practice Spanish in so many ways. Here are some ideas:

1. Give each child a piece of drawing paper and crayons or markers. Say things in Spanish that tell them how to draw the town. Use Spanish location phrases that they may be learning, like “al lado de” (next to), a la derecha de (to the right of), lejos de (far from) to say where one thing should be in relation to another. Or, say what particular items to draw along with how many of each or what color(s) they should be. For example: Hay dos casas. Una case es amarilla y una case es rosa. (There are two houses. One house is yellow, and one house is red.)
    
   
2. Allow each child to draw their own town. Then have them describe their towns using any Spanish they are learning. For example, if they are learning location phrases, then have them tell you where things are in relation to each other. If they are learning colors and numbers, have them tell you how many of each item there is and the color. They can also use verbs and vocabulary to say what people in the town are doing or where they are. Examples: El chico está en el parque. (The boy is in the park.)  Los niños juegan en el jardín. (The children play in the yard.)
    
   
3. Have students draw towns according to a specific written list that tells exactly what should be in the town and where. Then when all the towns are drawn, give each child a little car and have them listen to sentences you say about where the car goes.
    
   
4. A variation on this last activity would be to have students work in pairs telling each other where their cars should go.
