I love to hit garage sales or resale shops to find items I can use for Spanish class activities. The items you see above each cost me about $1, and I have used them countless times for a variety of activities.
Here are some of the things I have done:
- Pass items out to students and have them describe each using adjectives including colors. Depending on the level of difficulty, I will have them describe in full sentences or not.
- Play “Voy a la escuela y llevo...” to practice learning clothing vocabulary.
- With younger children you can play Frío y caliente (Hot and Cold).
- Practice possessive adjectives, i.e. saying “my”, “your”, “his”, “their”, etc. To do this, I give pairs of students several clothing items. They divide them up and then say to each other what each has using the possessive adjectives. For example, one person says: mi falda (my skirt), mis pantalones (my pants), mis calcetines (my socks) talking about all his/her own things.
- Then that person talks about the other person’s things like this: tu camisa (your shirt), tus zapatos (your shoes), tu sombrero (your hat).
- Then, I have them put their things together and talk about “our” things like this: nuestro sombrero (our hat), nuestros calcetines (our socks), etc.
- Last, I have them take one of the dolls and give it clothes. Then they have to talk about her things like this: su falda (her skirt), sus zapatos (her shoes), etc. It’s a great hands-on activity that really helps solidify how to use these possessive adjectives.
You can do so many things with materials like these. Just use your imagination to create new activities. And, hit those garage sales and resale shops looking for things you think might make good activity materials.
