Yesterday I did this with my students grades 5-8. I wrote the dialog pictured above using the content we are learning this year. (Which, by the way, is from Spanish for You!’s newest theme, Mi vida, coming out June this year.)
The dialog is a short conversation between two students asking and answering questions about things they need to do, like work on the computer for homework and clean their rooms.
This makes use of “you” and “I” verb forms in the present tense along with vocabulary and grammar they have been learning.
Each student received a copy of the dialog, and then worked in pairs reading it to each other – one student in the role of “student 1” and one as “student 2”. This allowed them to get the feel of having a Spanish conversation.
Then, while in their pairs, they began writing their own dialogs using this one as a guide.
Next week, they will finish their dialogs, practice them with each other, and then trade them with another pair.
Dialogs are a great way to promote beginning conversation and to stretch students to use all they are learning about verb conjugation, vocabulary, and grammar together to communicate.
